Do You Suffer from Insomnia?
Most people have trouble either falling asleep or staying asleep at some point in their lives. This is often due to stressful situations or other outside factors. However, when sleeping issues become problematic or last for a period of time, the cause may be insomnia.
When trying to determine what is insomnia, it is important to note that this sleep disorder is basically defined by insomnia symptoms, rather than having a basic definition of its own. Symptoms of insomnia that also define this condition include trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, waking too early, feeling tired when you wake up, or a combination of any of these symptoms.
There are two types of this sleep disorder Primary and secondary. For the primary type of this sleep disorder, there are no underlying medical conditions or problems that are causing trouble sleeping. For the secondary type, the sleep problems are actually caused by other health issues, medications, or substance use. This sleep disorder may also be acute or chronic. Acute means it lasts for s shorter period of time, and chronic means it can last for longer periods of time.
Insomnia and depression occur together frequently, making depression one of the most common cause of the secondary type of this sleep disorder. However, other conditions can lead to the development of this sleep disorder as well. These include conditions that cause pain and those that cause an increased need to urinate. Certain medications may also cause trouble sleeping as well as substances such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
Complications for sleep disorders may include poor performance, lack of concentration, inability to perform dangerous tasks safely, increased risk of psychological problems, weakened immune system, weight gain, and increased severity and complication risk for other medical conditions.
Although trouble sleeping may be alleviated with over the counter preparations, it is best to speak with a physician for proper insomnia treatment. It needs to be determined if there are any underlying factors causing insomnia which should be treated rather than just treating the symptom of having trouble sleeping. However, if the physician does choose to treat the issue of sleeping trouble, medications or behavior therapies are available. Behavior therapies can be as simple as learning new sleep patterns, practicing relaxation, or sleep restriction.
